Australia’s Skilled Migration Update: New Processing Priorities Explained

The Department of Home Affairs has introduced new processing priorities for certain skilled visa applications, effective 19 September 2026.
These changes may affect how applications are prioritised, particularly for occupations in key industries and applicants applying from within Australia. Understanding these priorities can help visa applicants and employers better understand what to expect when planning their migration journey.
The updated priorities apply to several skilled visa subclasses, including Subclass 482, 186, 189, 190, 191, 491, and 494.
What’s Changing?
Effective 19 September 2026:
🔹 Priority Occupations and Industries – Applications relating to construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, and resources are given higher priority, alongside certain law enforcement and defence interests.
🔹 Subclass 482 Specialist Skills Stream – Applications under the Specialist Skills stream are also prioritised.
🔹 Onshore Applications – For many skilled visa subclasses, applications lodged while the applicant is in Australia are prioritised over certain offshore applications.
These arrangements are intended to guide the Department’s processing order for eligible skilled visa applications.
What This Means for Employers and Visa Applicants?
If you are applying for a skilled visa or sponsoring an overseas worker, these changes may influence where your application sits within the Department’s processing priorities.
However, higher processing priority does not guarantee faster processing or visa approval. Processing times can still vary depending on the visa subclass, the completeness of the application, and individual circumstances.
Understanding the relevant priorities can help applicants and employers plan ahead and set realistic expectations throughout the visa process.
