New Clarification on Bridging Visa Work Experience for 186 Visa Eligibility

ree

The Department of Home Affairs has released an important clarification for migrants currently navigating the skilled visa pathway—particularly those aiming for the Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme) Visa under the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream.

One of the key requirements for the 186 Visa under the TRT stream is demonstrating relevant work experience in the nominated occupation. Until recently, it was unclear whether time spent working on a Bridging Visa (BV) could contribute toward this requirement.

What’s New?

The Department has now confirmed that time worked on a Bridging Visa can count as relevant experience, provided that:

  • The Bridging Visa was linked to a previously granted Subclass 457 or 482 visa, and

  • The occupation during the BV period is the same as that on the original 457/482 visa.

This includes:

  • Time spent on a BV while waiting for a decision on a new 457 or 482 visa application, if the occupation remains the same.

  • Time spent on a BV tied to a 186 TRT application even if the application was later withdrawn, as long as the occupation criteria are met.

What Doesn’t Count?

If you’re on a Bridging Visa waiting for a new 482 visa in a different occupation, that time will not count towards 186 eligibility until the new visa is granted. Only once the new occupation is officially approved on a new 482 visa will any subsequent work experience begin to count toward the 186 TRT pathway.

Why This Matters

This clarification provides greater transparency for skilled migrants navigating complex visa timelines. For those who may have faced uncertainty due to delays or application changes, it offers a fairer assessment of genuine work contributions in Australia.

Policy updates are expected soon—stay tuned for the latest!

If you're unsure how this impacts your visa plans, it's a good time to speak with a registered migration agent to review your timeline and strategy.
